ALSA International Video Conference 2023 was carried out on April 1st, 2023.
The ALSA International Video Conference is an annual work program under the Public Relations Division in the form of an online conference in collaboration with the ALSA Local Chapter and the National Chapter to discuss current legal issues that are currently hotly discussed. This year, the ALSA International Video Conference, Local Chapter of Universitas Sriwijaya, raised the Imposition of the Death Penalty in Diminishing Narcotics Offenders. This theme was raised because it was motivated by the many cases of narcotics crimes that have become transnational crimes committed between countries without boundaries and regions, especially in Indonesia. The Indonesian government has issued Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics, which can ensnare drug dealers or dealers by imposing the most severe punishment, namely the death penalty. However, on the other hand, the problem that is often raised is that the execution of the death penalty for drug dealers in Indonesia is contrary to aspects of human rights. However, the death penalty is needed mainly if the perpetrator while in prison is still distributing narcotics, besides that it is also part of fulfilling the community's sense of justice, and showing the government's seriousness in enforcing the law. Indonesia has recognized narcotics crimes as extraordinarily serious crimes against humanity, thus enforcement requires special, effective, and maximum treatment.
